The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse announced on June 18, 2026 that they will run an engagement process on the 2025 edition of the National Building Code before deciding how it should apply, with sessions beginning in late summer. In-person and virtual sessions are planned along with an online input tool, and the territory is working with code experts to present the changes introduced in the 2025 edition.

The National Building Code sets minimum standards for energy efficiency alongside safety, accessibility and structural performance. Yukon has previously exempted itself from Section 9.36 energy efficiency provisions, and Whitehorse city council has repeatedly raised concerns about how the territory adopts the code.
