Manitoba ranks eighth in the 2024 Scorecard, maintaining its position in the middle of the pack for energy efficiency, with a score of 30 points out of 100.

Manitoba leads the country with the highest and longest-term energy efficiency savings targets, and would score considerably higher in the Scorecard rankings by focusing more on programs than codes and standards to achieve them. This may require rethinking how program costs and benefits are evaluated. The province maintains consistent but moderate performance in electricity and natural gas savings

Manitoba plays an important role in developing national appliance and equipment standards, participating in six technical subcommittees and contributing significant funding to develop testing protocols. 

Manitoba has the opportunity to set a national example by developing a comprehensive energy poverty strategy that leverages energy efficiency to enhance affordability and reduce vulnerability. Expanding targeted programs for low-income and Indigenous communities will be crucial for making energy equity a reality in Manitoba.
