The Government of the Northwest Territories has released its 2024-2025 Energy Initiatives Report, the territory's annual public accounting of energy program activity and progress against its energy strategy commitments.

Alberta has retired its twenty-year-old zero-congestion transmission planning standard and replaced it with an Optimal Transmission Planning framework. The new approach accepts a managed, cost-effective level of grid congestion rather than building to eliminate it.

This creates room for non-wires alternatives — energy storage, demand-side measures and system optimization — to compete against physical line expansion.

The 2025 mandate letter for Alberta's Minister of Affordability and Utilities directs the minister to work with industry to develop proposals for more efficient electricity usage through demand-side management.
